Not necessarily, no. My role can be performed alone just fine, or there would probably be more.

If it helps, Junpei did call my role something of a wildcard, and he is not wrong as far as that goes. My purpose doesn't change, but what I do for it does.

It appears to be designed that way, yes. It's a lot like my place as a sword - we are, after all, meant to be used.

It is the purpose that we were made for. It's true that humans can use each other, too, but it's different in that they are not made as tools like we are... even if that's what some may become, in the end.

There's not much of a difference between a purpose you're born with and one you choose for yourself.

Which is why it gets annoying when those like Hizamaru act like they're doing me a favour by treating their sense of duty as more important, and then think the only possible reason I'd have an issue with that is if I weren't human. Or are you the same?

Are you not human? [ there's just curiosity in the question, not a trace of judgment. a moment later, he dismisses it. ] Ah, I suppose it doesn't matter if you've already accepted that, does it?

While I'm sure that we are all dedicated to our own missions, I wouldn't presume to put my duty above anyone else's. Obviously our own motivations will be most important to each of us, but it doesn't make anyone else's duty any less important. And as long as we are here together, we should work as a team as much as we are able.

Hizamaru means well, but I think there is such as thing as being too focused on one's mission, sometimes.
